Alappuzha Backwaters

Climatic Conditions :

Although Alappuzha is charming throughout the year, the environs are most enjoyable during winter, as the summer months are rather humid.

Temperature Range :

Generally the climate is temperate with temperatures ranging between 22 to 35°C in summer and 20 to 32°C during winter.
Best time to visit : August to October

Known as the “Venice of the East”, the exotic district of Kerala is endowed with an enchanting blend of the tranquil backwaters alongside the magnificent Arabian Sea. Tourists worldwide throng Alappuzha for a spellbinding treat of senses while sailing in kettuvallom (houseboat) on crisscrossing network of lakes, lagoons, canals and fresh water rivers with a beautiful beach in the neighborhood.

The place is also a cultural and traditional benchmark of beautiful Kerala. Snake boat races are held in the region between August and October every year. Hordes of tourist visit the district during the period to catch a lucky glimpse of the spectacular regattas of long thin boats powered by up to 120 oarsmen sharing noteworthy coordination and exemplary team spirit.

Earlier known as Alleppey, the place is also visited for its marine products, coir industry, rice, bananas, yams and cassava. Visitors feast their eyes on sights of rare migratory birds at Pathiramanal, hardly half an hour drive away on a speedboat. Tourists also enjoy performances of India’s finest temple musicians at the local Mullakal temple, held in December. The Krishnapuram Temple and St. Andrew's Church are other tourism attractions in the area.
