Famous for the colorful festival of Carnival on the New Year eve, the beach site of Cochin or Kochi is a prominent commercial hub of India comprising of peninsulas and islands. The port of Cochin or Kochi became a center of trade and commerce with foreigners, when the Portuguese, the Dutch and later the British transformed an obscure fishing village into a sophisticated European township. The cosmopolitan character and cultural interfaces of the city are reflected in the remains of the Indo-European architecture here. A leisurely walk through the lanes of the city is the only way to explore truly the historic Fort Kochi.

The testimonials of the cultural heritage of Cochin are the ancient Bolghatty Palace, The Dutch Palace and the Jewish Synagogue. An attractive island near the city of Ernakulam, Bolghatty is famous for the Bolghatty Palace built by the Dutch in 1744 AD. Another attraction of the beach is Dutch Palace or Mattancherry Palace located at Mattancherry.

The Palace was built by Portuguese in the mid-16th century and later repaired and extended by the Dutch. The Jewish Synagogue is the oldest of its kind in India, built in 1586 AD by the prosperous Jewish community.
