 Parambikulam Wildlife

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary constitutes of the evergreen hills, moist deciduous forest, grassy hills and swampy areas, locally called “vayals”.

The Sanctuary also represents the water bodies of Parambikulam, Thunakadavu and Peruvarippalam, teeming with Crocodile population.

The Sanctuary with its wide range of rare and unique flora is a rearing place of many mammals, reptiles, beautiful fishes and birds, including, Bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Fox, Bear, Nilgiri Tahr, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Elephant, Gaur, Crocodile, Pangoline, Cane Turtle, King Cobra, Spectacled Cobra, Viper, Python, Rat Snake, Vine Snake and many more. Kerala’s teak tree with maximum dimensions (height 45 meters and girth at breast height 642cm) at the Sanctuary is also worth a visit.

The habitat of Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary varies from natural to manmade; the man- made habitats being Teak plantations and cultivation of Eucalyptus and Tapioca in newly cleared areas. The evergreen patches in the valleys and moist regions account for the Malabar elements. Situated 600m above sea level, in the Palghat district of Kerala, the Parambikulam sanctuary borders the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary of Tamilnadu, Nelliampathy Reserve and Vazhachal and Sholayar ranges. The climatic conditions at the sanctuary are salubrious and the temperature ranges from 38 to 21 degree Celsius. Though open throughout the year, it is suggested to skip monsoon season for a visit.
