A very fine example of nature’s bounty, endowed with great picturesque landscapes and opulent biodiversity, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a guaranteed satisfaction to the senses of a veritable visitor. The ardently safeguarded and competently administered reserve is a repository of rare and endangered flora and fauna spread wide across the region and outlines the chief watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and Pamba.
Resting only 4 km from Kumily, the
spice town of Kerala, Periyar Wildlife
Sanctuary is sprawled over an area
of 777 Sq. km. in Thekkady, engulfing
360 sq km of thick evergreen stretch
of forest. In 1978, Periyar was declared
a tiger reserve and is now home to
an estimated 40 tigers. Famous for
its geomorphology, diverse wildlife
and panorama, the reserve is a world-renowned
wild life tourism spot. With temperature
ranging from 15ºC to 31ºC,
the sanctuary teems with its best
of offerings between October and May.
The splendid artificial lake
formed by Mullaperiyar Dam across
the River Periyar, intensifies
the captivating essence of the
place, as it offers the overwhelming
prospect of watching and capturing
(on camera / handicams) herds
of wild elephants playing on
the banks of the lake, from
the safety of a boat on the
lake. The other animals that
can be seen in are Gaur, Wild
Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer,
Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild
Dog and very rarely, a Tiger.
