Thattekad Bird Sanctuaryor Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary at Thattekad is one of the most important bird sanctuary in India. It is situated around 60 kms north –east of Kochi and has an area of about 25 sq km. This bird sanctuary was named after Dr. Salim Ali a famous Ornithologist who described the sanctuary as “ the richest bird habitat on peninsular India”. The bird sanctuary is home to numerous species of Birds including forest and water birds.
The meaning of Thattekad is a ‘flat forest’. Find some of the birds have been spotted in the sanctuary such as The Indian Pitta visits sanctuary during winter and spend almost six month, many more like Ground Thrush, an orange-headed bird, Large –billed leaf warbler, Jerdon’s Nightjar, Indian Cukoo, Darters, Cormorants, Collared Scops Owl Frogmouth, Pompadour, Green Pigeon, Yellow-browed Bulbuls. The entrance to the sanctuary is right after the bridge which replaces the former ferry. Once entered the sanctuary , it is worth to explore the birds or some harder to see species of birds.Thattekad bird sanctuary is a paradise for the bird wathers located between the brances of Periyar river.
